“The Public Servant”
Ronald L. Newton was born in White Plains, New York. He moved to North Carolina in 1975 and has been a resident since that time. Mr. Newton is married to Deborah Scarborough Newton and has three children and eight grandchildren.
Mr. Newton attended Hofstra University and majored in Finance and Accounting. He attended North Carolina Central University where he received three degrees; political Science, Criminal Justice, and a Law Degree. Mr. Newton was a distinguished Book Award recipient in Law School and a Dean’s List Student.
After completing his education, Mr. Newton has held several positions.
Mr. Newton worked as a Public Safety Officer for the City of Durham, his last assignment being in the Vice and Narcotics Division. He served as a Litigation Investigator for the Westchester County Legal Aid Society. Mr. Newton is the former Business Manager for AFSCME Local 77 where he represented 1200 support service employees at Duke University. He has served as the Regional Manager for Motels of America. Mr. Newton also served as the Chief Financial Officer for Scarborough and Hargett Funeral Home which is the oldest minority funeral home in the State of North Carolina. Presently Mr. Newton is the CEO and sole owner of State of the Art Financial Services and has held this position for the last 30 years.
Mr. Newton has served his community for more than 35 years through his various political affiliations. He was the Westchester County Chairman of the Jesse Jackson for President Committee; Campaign Manager for Senator Richard Brodsky; Elected to the Elmsford Board of Education and served as its President; Chairman of the Westchester County Black Lawyers Association; Mr. Newton has been affiliated with several other local campaign efforts, such as, Wib Gulley for Mayor, Beverly Washington Jones for Durham City Council, Hillary Clinton for President, Franklin O Hanes for Durham City Council, and Mr. Newton was a Candidate in the 2016 Election for North Carolina Lt. Governor
Mr. Newton is the Founder of the Durham Bulls Amateur Athletic Association. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Daisy E. Scarborough Foundation. Mr. Newton is credited with negotiating two Collective Bargaining Agreements with Duke University. He is an Author of two Tax Guides and is considered a foremost authority on Tax Settlements and related fields.
